Glendale Recycling Wont let Devon County Show Go to Waste!

This years Devon County Show is full of tasty bites, but what happens to your leftovers when you through them away? It will be recycled into compost for your garden!

Glendale Recycling, based at Westpoint, Exeter, an organic waste solutions company, are proud to be providing catering waste recycling for the Devon County Show at the Showground again this year.

The scheme will prevent waste food from being sent to landfill and will instead turn it into a valuable nutrient rich compost for use in horticulture, agriculture and tree planting. Making Devon County Show truly sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Glendale Recycling harnesses nature in a fully enclosed and environmentally compliant plant to turn scraps of food into sanitised compost. This is done using an In-Vessel Composting System. The carbon footprint of the operation is minimal, as the waste will travel less than two miles to the composting facility at the Hill Barton Business Park, Clyst St Mary.

The facility is the only one of its kind in Devon developed specifically to address the recycling requirements of the catering, restaurant, food manufacturing, tourism and leisure industries who seek to divert their organic waste from the increasingly environmentally and financially costly option of landfill.

Glendale is working with waste collection companies to provide a bespoke service that will enable catering wastes to be collected from waste producers and delivered to the Glendale Recycling facility at Clyst St Mary for composting.  The end result is a potential financial saving for the waste producer, an environmentally sustainable treatment solution for the waste and the production of local PEAT FREE compost that will be used to grow more food locally. Glendale Recycling supports a number of local community food projects including school vegetable gardens and community farms.

UK Drought - Woodland Creation & Watering Advice

More rain fell in England and Wales in the last week than at any time since the start of February, alleviating the drought that has affected areas across the middle of the country. Most of the rainfall came in south Wales and the south-west of England, two of the areas worst hit by the dry spell.

In general terms it is best to let trees find their own water, and it would have to be in extreme circumstances that watering established plants would be required. However, across much of the country, the soils are "exceptionally dry" after England's driest spring in a century. This means it will take much longer than usual for the land to recover, even if strong rainfall continues.

Below are some tips and ideas for maintaining your young woodland over the summer months.

Mulch

The use of mulch around plants has two main benefits

It suppresses weeds, reduces competition and gives the plant a better chance of growth, but it also retains moisture in the ground, reducing the need for watering.

Well-applied mulch will permit all available water to soak through to the roots as well as preventing water loss through evaporation.

When carrying out planting projects, you should always apply a good 100mm layer of mulch, EcoSci is able to source the best products for all your planting needs.

Hedges

Similar to the maintenance of woodlands mulching hedge lines will assist in keeping things cool and moist in normal circumstances.

If a constant water supply is easily accessible, the installation of a drip pipe, or leaky hose will produce benefits. These are very simple and easy to install and will assist young plants throughout the establishment period. The drip pipe should be installed prior to mulching and then covered. This ensures that the water reaches the soil quickly, and reduces evaporation, whilst hiding the hose and leaving a natural look to the hedge base.

Larger Trees

During a typical warm summer, (if there is such a thing these days) a tree with a one-metre canopy will require approximately 40-80 litres of water per week.

When planting a larger tree we always install a watering tube around the rootball to ensure that any water goes directly to the roots.

After planting, trees will need watering once or twice per week, depending upon conditions. This should be sufficient to wet the soil thoroughly, but not to the point of saturation.

As with all trees, dressing of mulch will reduce water loss from evaporation, and act as a weed suppressant.

Our sister company Civic Trees is the longest established tree moving and specimen tree supply company in the UK. No-one know more about planting and maintaining large trees than the team over at Civic.

Newly Planted Woodlands

In many cases where large numbers of smaller trees have been planted, it is not economically viable to water them. In such cases it may be more cost effective not to water at all, but simply to replace failures. Our sister company Coblands has an amazing selection of the best trees & shrubs available in the UK and Silvanus can plant and maintain them for you!!

EcoSci Team Up with One Planet Food Project

EcoSci & West Country Compost is sponsoring Torbay Coast and Countryside Trusts One Planet Food Project at Occombe Farm in Devon. Glendale’s Recycling Division EcoSci, has provided the project with over 40 tonnes of compost for use in the community fruit and vegetable garden.

The garden provides a outdoors community learning space, and its hoped will go on to provide a community veg box scheme to the local area directly from the project. The income from this will enable the project to become sustainable in the longer term and encourage local people to get involved in a hands on way. EcoSci’s West Country Compost is Peat Free and suitable for organic use, so it was perfect for the job of enriching the new plots and creating raised beds in the poly tunnels.
