Edible Gardens in Schools
http://www.ediblegardens.org.uk
Edible Gardens in Schools was set up by Rachel Sykes at the beginning of 2005 in order to help schools in Devon to establish organic, edible gardens in their school grounds. EGS offers practical, hands-on workshops to schools on topics such as Building Raised Beds, Spring Seeds Sowing, Building Compost Systems and Making Liquid Fertiliser.
EcoSci has supplied West Country Compost to several school projects including recently Diptford and Harbetonford Primary Schools.
Paignton Zoo Environmental Park
EcoSci composts poo from rhino, elephant and giraffe to make its famous Paignton Zoo Poo http://www.paigntonzoo.org.uk EcoSci arrange the collection of the poo and take it to our own composting site where it is mixed with shredded garden waste and thoroughly composted over a period of several months. It is then screened and bagged and made available for sale at the Zoo shop in carry out bags and in larger bags from garden centres . We also help out annually at the Zoo’s Poo Week!
Compost Awareness Events
We have met many keen gardeners and farmers alike at the Devon County Chow where we have regularly been asked to be part of the Devon County Council recycling tent. EcoSci is responsible for recycling 55,000t a year of garden waste in the Devon area contributing significantly to recycling rates in the county.
We also assist with free bags or deliveries of loose compost for District Council compost days throughout the year. You may have seen us or our West County Compost or Paignton Zoo Poo at various events organised by your local council.
If you have green garden waste that you wish to compost you can do so at home in a compost bin available from your local council – follow this link http://www.recycledevon.org/pages/info_composting.asp#home or you may be able to put it out for doorstep collection, again speak to your local council to find out if they operate such a scheme.
If you have more than your bin or collection can cope with then take it to your local recycling centre which you can find via this link http://www.recycledevon.org/pages/LS_reuse_recycle.asp
